I have a 1999 baja outlaw 25 with a 7.4 mpi and i'm not getting advance timing. Most of the older 350's timing are set about 8 deg before top dead center. Setting timing for total only with no regard to base timing is a racers trick that's just fine for a round round or strip race car motor that is generally at or above where total timing is.

Shine the timing light at the harmonic balancer timing mark on the driver's side of the engine. I have checked the base timing in service mode and it is at 8 deg. Read the number on the timing plate adjacent to the timing mark on the balancer. This method was recommend by the tech at racer brown.

The manula says ten but someone mentioned at least 10 is best. Some california smog certified 350 timing were set back to 0 deg or, at top dead center. New long duration, high lift cam, msd stuff, 101 cc ported oval port iron heads,. So for 36* total timing you would mark your damper at 2.51 ahead of the timing mark.
