Any idea how to fix? Rebooting is the simplest option to fix any issue raised in steam. When you launch the game, or if you toggle cloud support for a game, the icon turns from the question mark to just a cloud icon.

If there are no issues with the steam servers, then restarting your modem, router, or modem/router. I removed the steam_frame_force_close=1 from the steam.desktop and added it to the autostart command. At least, that's the error message i see when i look a little bit deeper into it.

On your screenshot it shows the proper steam (pinned to the taskbar) icon and then next to it is the active steam icon which is showing the white paper icon. Problem is when you are playing a player for the first time steam does not have that player's image in steam cache yet, so it returns the question mark image and then starts downloading. Did you set steam client in public or private connection ? I think the steam client automatically restarted at this point because of the update.
Try out these tips to make steam go online. Did you try other wifi connection ? Question mark avatars are the default avatar for a steam user, seeing these usually mean the user hasn't. To make your real online status hidden or invisible to your steam friends, you need to set your profile mode to offline.

Does steam have a caching problem they are unaware of ingame where people's avatars are question marks?
As many steam users can’t figure out how to do this, i have. I think it would be an easy fix and if i'm the only one does anyone have an. Yes, it seems like it is a 400 error code and the token for authentication to the server has expired. In any game i play on steam i only see question mark icons.
Or maybe your internet service provider block connection to your steam client ? Checked for steam client update, sep 11 update available, so i downloaded and installed. Go to someone else's profile and if they have a question mark avatar download it and then upload it as your own I tested this with a couple of games in my library,.
